FAQ Friday: Importance of Documents

On Friday, August 14th, Attorney Paula M. Mattson-Sarli, explains the importance of documents.

We often receive documents from our clients ahead of their meetings. This can be so helpful especially if they want to understand their documents better or have them reviewed. These explanations can be eye opening.

In these situations of reviewing documents, we often didn’t prepare the documents ourselves, but we are able to explain their intent and plan for deeply for understanding.

There was a school of thought that powers of attorney should spring into life when the owner becomes incapacitated. Now it’s more common that the power of attorney is durable, which means it is effective immediately upon signing, through incapacity and to death.

The power of attorney was most recently updated through legislature in 2023. So we should often consider that if reviewing documents for effectiveness going forward.

Reviews don’t always mean changing or updating documents. Our goal is always leaving our clients better off than when they come in. This means having them fully understand the documents containing their plan.

If you aren’t sure what you have, take a look and let us know if you need our assistance. We are happy to help past clients with changes as well.
