FAQ Friday: Names
On Friday, May 9, 2025, Attorney, Paula Mattson-Sarli talks about "names". We will ask for any names you might be called by and while we make jokes about a secret alias, what we are really getting at is if you own any assets titled in another name.
It could be a previous married or unmarried name or if at some point someone misspelled your name. Paula had a client who had someone who made a mistake with their name which lent to them even having their driver’s license in this incorrect name. While that was still encouraged to clear up, we can name that as an alias in all estate planning documents so there isn’t risk after passing.
This could turn into a situation where your beneficiaries or agents would have to “fight for” or aim to prove you own a certain asset where your name is misspelled. It’s important to account for each instance when possible.
Our office is here to help with document updates and guidance for these situations as well.
