FAQ Friday: Next Steps

Friday, January 23rd, Attorney Steven Berger talks about initial steps after a loved one passes.

Our office gets calls from people anywhere from hours after someone passes to weeks later. Everyone’s grieving process is different, but many are in shock.

Our current trust maintenance clients have the benefit of their personal representative having a free meeting if they are still part of this program when they pass.

Some of the items needing to be addressed when a loved one passes is whether or not there is enough cash to pay the funeral home since they don’t extend credit. Accounts in the descendants name are not often accessible unless there is a POA designation so often people are reimbursed from the estate.

Your number one job is to grieve and let us handle the work. We need to make sure records and property doesn’t disappear. You’ll want to gather up tax records.

Social security runs smoothly and efficiently. IRA’s need to be transferred, but there is time for that. We don’t want to make any rash decisions.
