FAQ Friday: Choosing your personal representative
On Friday, July 18, 2025, Estate and Trust Administrator, Karla Horn talks about choosing your personal representative.
This can be a stressful decision. A personal representative can be used interchangeably with the term “trustee”.
An individual who is task oriented would do well in this role since there are many steps involved in a timely manner.
Comfortability with math is also important due to valuing assets and computing distributions.
Geographically located similar to the assets involved can be very helpful so there isn’t a need to travel.
In the state of Maryland, if a personal representative is needed and they don’t live in the state, they will need a registered agent so that there is an address for the register of wills office to serve them if needed.
An ability to show empathy and compassion since most everyone involved will be simultaneously grieving.
