FAQ Friday: Significance

Friday, September 12th, Attorney, Paula Mattson-Sarli discusses the significance of September 12th and her "why" behind practicing estate planning law.

Paula’s father died 21 years ago on this date. She was in her last year of law school working as a paralegal. This tragedy jump started her interest and love of estate planning and estate administration.

Working on this helped with grief channeling and also ingrained in her the importance of having thorough estate planning in place.

Paula’s father was 59 years old and a Navy veteran. Then he worked for the post office full time afterwards. He was a wonderful man who worked hard and often held other part time jobs as well.

Paula’s mother and father were divorced so when he passed it was left on her and her brother to manage. Her father did not have a Will. Luckily, Paula had some undergraduate courses in this type of law and was able to navigate a little better than most.

The register of wills is usually pretty great about telling those with more complex situations when they should consider hiring legal counsel. They see all the good, bad and ugly of death and are wonderful with helping anyone who comes to them.

Going through this process in a personal situation caused a shift in Paula’s law focus and her life was changed. She had a desire and focus to help others dealing with death and also to prepare as well.

As her law career started, it naturally morphed into also providing elder law help as well. As we age and live longer, more in depth care can be needed. I am happy to be of service to our clients and remember this defining day in my life.
